Experience

Stenas Legal was established in 2012 by Steven Stevens, who was formerly a Tax Partner in the Melbourne office of Herbert Smith Freehills and has been regularly recognised as a leading tax practitioner in Australia.

He practised as an economist for 12 years in both federal and state governments and was a senior Victorian Treasury official before commencing legal practice in 1988.

Steven is a former President of the Law Institute of Victoria (2010) and Director of the Law Council of Australia (2010-2011).

Steven is the current Chair of the Law Council of Australia Professional Ethics Committee and a current member and former Co-Chair of the Professional Ethics Committee of the International Bar Association.

Representation

Steven was appointed to the inaugural Legal Services Council established in October 2014 under the Legal Profession Uniform Law applying in New South Wales and Victoria. He retired from the Legal Services Council in October 2020.

Steven is also a former member of the Victorian Legal Services Board, serving two terms from 2013 to 2018 as a Non-Advocate Practitioner Member of the Board.

He has represented the legal profession both in Victoria and nationally in a number of capacities, including legal regulatory bodies, ATO consultative committees and the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration.
